Some Bible Commentaries.

Introduction

This list makes no attempt to be comprehensive and what has seemed the best at this time and may soon be surpassed. What this list does is to point the reader in certain directions.

For most preachers the shorter and simpler commentaries, or even a one volume commentary like The New Bible Commentary, 21st Century edition, IVP 1994 will provide enough information on most passages. Only on particularly knotty texts will the more detailed commentaries sometimes be a help. For those who want to pursue their studies at greater depth, perhaps for examinations or higher qualifications, the more heavyweight commentaries will need to be consulted. What we provide is a guide to some commentaries at different levels all of which are worth consulting for particular purposes.

Many of those listed come in series where particular publishers provide commentaries at roughly the same level for all the books of the Bible. But it is not advisable to buy the whole series for inevitably some are less good than others.

Where there are blanks you can fill them in from series like WBC, NICOT, NICNT for the heavyweight, AC, IBC for medium and NIBC and the Tyndale commentaries for the shorter.

Where books are listed on the chart but no identification of series is given, they are independent, individual commentaries.
